Ramaswamy Naicker, who was an advocate of abolition of the caste system and ended the dominance of Brahmins in Tamil society. During this period, three members of the author's family, his father and two cousins, left Tamil Nadu to find better job opportunities in Calcutta. Despite the language and cultural barrier, the writer's father, Rajam worked as a stenographer and studied hard to become an accountant. The book is a personal journey of hope and optimism.
