Summary, etc. Health and Socio-economic developments are so closely intertwined that it is impossible to achieve one without the other. While India's economic development over the last decade has been noteworthy, our health indicators are very poor. The health sector in India is experiencing what I call a "1-2-3 challenge" India needs 1 Million Doctors 2 Million Nurses and 3 Million Hospital beds So as to achieve the world average for the above indicators per 1000 population. The projected requirement for the number of hospital beds calls for a large number of hospitals to come up in the near future. Advances in the field of medical and information technology along with increased expectations from the public for better health care services call for better management of our hospitals. Hospitals have become complex organizations as they consume vast amount of resources in delivering a wide range of health care services. Increased cost for medical care, ageing population and the potentially declining levels of service threaten the quality of service delivered. Liberalization of the medical insurance sector has added a new dimension to the delivery and pricing of health care services. Poor quality of services not only wastes resources but is positively dangerous to the health and welfare of the patients and the community at large. Hospital managers, current and future aspirants, therefore need a certain amount of professional management inputs so as to manage the hospitals effectively and efficiently. Hospital managers require "problem solving skills" besides developing a conceptual understanding of hospital management challenges, in order to be effective and efficient in service delivery. The proposed book on "Hospital Management: Concepts and Case studies" is expected to meet the theoretical and practical needs of current hospital managers as well as students who aspire to become hospital managers in future. An excellent book with practical case studies & hellip Professor Ramani has brought to life the science behind good, financially sound healthcare management that is compassionate and remains focused on the patient. Dr Chandy Abraham Group Head - Quality, Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals Group Head- Quality, Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals Required reading for any healthcare leader who wants to set apart his organization from all others.
